I’m small in size but big in heart
And I get really sad when we are apart.
Kept in a cage you know that it’s true
That my entire world does revolve around you.
To me you are this gigantic great beast
Who for all that I know, might see me as a feast.
And it’s only the gentle passage of time
That’ll prove your intentions towards me are sublime.
You bring me my food, you bring me my hay
And I can only pray hard that this happens each day.
My water supply is checked only by you
And if it runs dry there’s not a thing I can do.
Boredom is something every captive pet knows
Without stimulation how slow the time goes.
Time out from my cage – the highlight of my day
But I can only do this at the times that you say.
With teeth constantly growing the ability to chew
On toys, hay and fiber – it’s what I was born to do.
I need to grind down my molars some 24/7
Or teeth malocclusion could send me to heaven.
In return for your care I can offer so much
I’ll keep you amused, and I’m soft to the touch.
You can teach me some tricks, make me come to your call
Together you and me – we can have quite a ball.
So if you choose me to share in your life
Treat me with kindness – like a man treats his wife.
Please don’t ever forget that on you I rely
For it’s only your kindness that lets me get by…
